PRACTICAL SELLER GUIDE

Bright & Shiny, copper pipe and insulated cable: what is the difference?

Recognise the main material groups and avoid treating all copper-bearing scrap as one grade.

Start with three separate groups

Bright & Shiny wire, plumbing copper and insulated cable are different material groups. Keep them separate where safe and practical, and show each group in your enquiry. They do not automatically receive the same rate. “Copper” describes the metal, but it does not describe all the other material included in a scrap load.

Bright & Shiny is bare wire, not every shiny copper item

For an initial Copperex enquiry, show clean, bare, uncoated copper wire separately from insulated, coated, soldered or heavily discoloured material. A copper pipe with a shiny surface is still plumbing scrap rather than Bright & Shiny wire. Final grading depends on inspection and the receiving specification; a photograph is a starting point, not a guaranteed grade.

Plumbing pipe and fittings need their own assessment

Pipe can include soldered joints, brass valves, paint, insulation, steel clips and other attachments. Those details matter. Show cut tube separately from mixed plumbing assemblies if you can do so easily. Do not dismantle fittings simply to chase a grade before asking what preparation is useful.

Insulated cable includes more than the copper inside

Cable is weighed with its sheath and other construction still present unless preparation has been separately agreed. The copper content varies with the construction, so the outside diameter alone cannot set the offer. Do not label a mixed bin with a copper percentage unless you have a sound basis and explain it to the buyer.

Coated and mixed conductors can be misleading

A silver-coloured conductor is not enough to identify the metal from a phone photo. Tell us about known aluminium conductors, tinned wire and mixed material. Select “Mixed / not sure” rather than forcing the load into the most valuable-looking category. Existing cable ends and readable markings help the discussion.

Make the next step simple

Send an overview and separate close-ups for each material group, your approximate weight and suburb. Ask how each group will be assessed, whether weights will be recorded separately, and what attachments or charges affect the offer. The grade, payable weight, rate and total must be agreed before the sale proceeds. For a first transaction, start with a manageable load rather than committing all future supply.
